The death at first appeared to be the tragic tale of a 30-year-old tech entrepreneur struck down of natural causes while on honeymoon.

Now, however, as investors attempt to recoup millions of dollars they lost when Gerald Cotten died in Jaipur, India, lawyers are asking whether he is really dead.

Mr Cotten was the founder of Quadriga CX, Canada’s largest cryptocurrency exchange. At the time of his death from complications associated with Crohn’s disease, investors were unable to locate significant funds of cryptocurrency reserves.

Mr Cotten was the only person who had passwords to “digital wallets” containing more than £100 million. After his death, the exchange was forced to close, affecting 115,000 users.
