The AI supercomputer will be housed at Tesla's Riverbend Gigafactory on South Park Avenue in Buffalo.

Tesla will build a $500 million AI supercomputer that will be housed at its Riverbend Gigafactory on South Park Avenue in Buffalo, according to a Friday morning announcement from Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Tesla has been building a supercomputer, called Tesla Dojo, to process "millions of terabytes of data" from Tesla vehicles to assist with development of self-driving vehicles. Tesla decided to build it here, due to the region's "power supply, strong talent pipeline and availability of usable space," according to Hochul's news release.

“That computer will be housed here, but it will power innovation, ideas and people all over the state of New York,” Hochul said during a news conference.

Hochul also announced that the University at Buffalo will be the home base for the Empire AI Consortium, a group of universities and research institutions that will study AI opportunities. The consortium — a 10-year, $400 million investment — was part of Hochul’s budget this year.
