  • Musk says that Tesla is working hard to reveal Optimus at the end of September.
  • Tesla aims to hit a production rate of 2 million vehicles annually by the end of 2022.
  • The company’s new factory might be located in Canada.

Tesla held its annual shareholder meeting yesterday, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk once again teased the Optimus humanoid robot prototype and the location of Tesla’s new factory.

Before getting excited, let’s examine the relatively boring news from the annual shareholder meeting.

Tesla shareholders voted for board recommendations on most issues at the company’s annual shareholder meeting, including approving a stock split and re-electing directors, while rejecting proposals that are focused on the environment and governance.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company aimed to hit a production rate of 2 million vehicles annually by the end of 2022 and would continue building factories.

At the meeting, Musk said that Tesla might announce a new location “later this year” and teased the new location by saying, “We got a lot of Canada. I am half Canadian. Maybe I should?”

Tesla has factories in California and Shanghai and is ramping up two more in Austin, Texas, and Berlin, Germany. Musk said he expected to have 10-12 so-called gigafactories eventually.

Optimus might be revealed in September

While teasing AI Day #2, which was supposed to be held on August 19th but postponed by Musk to September 3rd, Musk revealed an image of the Optimus prototype.

The image appears to feature the robotic hands of the actual Tesla Optimus prototype, making a heart sign.

He previously explained the reason for postponing AI Day #2 as the company might be working on the prototype of Optimus until then.

Musk announced in January that the company is prioritizing the development of Optimus in 2022 over other products. Optimus, or Optimus Subprime — a bipedal, humanoid robot that Musk teased during Tesla’s AI Day in August 2021 — is the billionaire’s vision of a bot who could take on all the boring, repetitive tasks that humans would rather not do.

Version 1 of Optimus will hopefully start production in 2023, he said. “It will upend our idea of what the economy is,” explained Musk in a video of the event. “It will be able to do basically anything humans don’t want to do. It will do it. It’s going to bring an age of abundance. It may be hard to imagine it, but as you see Optimus develop, and we will make sure it’s safe, no Terminator stuff, it will transform the world to a degree even greater than the car.”
